  • A Proposal They Can't Refuse

    2022 by Caña, Natalie

This foodie-related fake relationship rom-com turns hot and heavy when meddlesome octogenarian matchmakers blackmail former childhood friends Kamilah Vega, who wants to modernize the family’s Humboldt Park Puerto Rican restaurant, and Liam Kane, who’s set to win a national competition for his family’s Irish American whiskey distillery, into an engagement, or the building they share will be sold. File this under smoldering in Chicagoland. Suggested by Sharon.

    2022 by Heron, Farah

A loosely inspired, South Asian twist on Jane Austen's Emma with an incredibly sweet, slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romance. A great mix of self discovery, humor, and a swoony yet low-steam romance. I really want to attend Kamila's Bollywood parties! Suggested by Rummanah.

  • Chlorine

    2023 by Song, Jade

This unflinching coming-of-age adult debut is easily one of my favorite reads of 2023. A refreshing twist on the horror genre, it follows swimmer Ren Yu as she navigates immigration, sexuality, abuse, and the pains of growing up. Disturbing, obsessive, and ultimately beautiful. • This Time Tomorrow

    2022 by Straub, Emma

I loved this smart, funny, creative time-travel book. Our protagonist, Alice, about to turn 40, awakens one morning to find she's 16 again. The how and why are fun, though what really matters is how much Straub makes us care for Alice and her kindly father, how well she captures the feel and place of it all (New York City), and how surprisingly tender and joyful the story is. • Dandelion Wine

    1999 by Bradbury, Ray

Drawing deeply from his own childhood growing up in Waukegan, this whimsical collection of short stories follows 12-year old Douglas Spaulding and captures the essence of he season. Yes, Bradbury's patented fantasy and magical realism are here and wonderful, though tempered, while the atmosphere of the stories is redolent of July crickets chirping, distant thunderstorms brewing, and languorous days of seemingly infinite leisure.
