Join us for a discussion of Helen Zia's book detailing the lives of exiles from Mao's China.
We're reading Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao's Revolution. In the late 1940s, some Chinese people, fleeing Mao’s Communist takeover, migrated to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States. Chinese American journalist Helen Zia interviewed hundreds of them about their experiences. In this book, she details the lives of four young Shanghai residents who made the difficult decision to leave home for a different life.
Books will be available in print and can be reserved for curbside pickup. The book is also available as an eBook and audiobook via OverDrive.
Registration closes at 10 am the day of the event. We will email the Zoom event link after registration has closed.
