Girls Got Game: Talking State with Melissa Isaacson
Saturday, December 14, 2019
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Radmacher Meeting Room
Join Melissa Isaacson as she talks about playing basketball for Niles West High School during their historic victory in the 1979 Illinois state finals and the lasting impact of her experience.
The passage of Title IX in 1972 guaranteed girls and boys equal opportunity to participate in sports in public schools. Her new memoir, State: A Team, a Triumph, a Transformation, describes how her team defeated East St. Louis. She describes the joy of putting on a first uniform and finally getting the chance to play, learn, sweat, lose, and win together as a team. She also discusses how basketball rescued team members from their collective frustrations and troubled homes and how the experience forever altered the course of their lives. The book will be available for purchase and signing following the event.
